Launched in 1972 by Billy Ray Hearn, Myrrh was Word's "Contemporary" label, originally focused on the burgeoning Jesus Music and Jesus Rock of the day. After a couple of years, the label later began signing mainstream market artists like Ray Price, and eventually expanded into other genres like Black Gospel in the late 70's and early 80's, alternative rock and even metal by the early 1990's. The label was retired in 2001, but was resumed in 2005 under the name Myrrh Worship, which became Word Worship in 2014, ending the iconic label's run.

Since Myrrh was one of the largest and longest-running labels in Contemporary Christian Music, and it also acted as a distributor for other smaller labels via its Jubilation Group subsidiary, it is featured in many different series in multiple roles. In the USA (and in many other countries), Myrrh utilized a sequential catalog number beginning with 6500, and that series is documented in the Myrrh 6500+ Album Series. Singles in the USA up through mid-1983 utilized a sequential catalog number starting with 100, and are compiled in the Myrrh 100+ Singles Series. After that point, Myrrh singles were included in Word's consolidated 901 Promotional Series. In the UK, the majority of Myrrh releases from the early 1970s through the late 1980s used a sequential catalog number beginning with 1000, as documented in the Myrrh UK 1000+ Album Series. Many Myrrh albums were also issued to the mainstream market from 1985 - 1990 in the USA via A&M Records distribution, as notated in the Word/A&M 8100+ Album Series and via Epic beginning in 1991, as captured in the CBS/Epic/Columbia Consolidated 30000+ Series
